Did you know...
The Uninsured: A Growing Problem Among Virginians
- Nearly 1,200,000 Virginians have no health insurance
- Nearly 250,000 live in Central Virginia
- 77% of the uninsured work full or part-time
- Most work in low paying, service industry jobs
- Each year thousands of Virginians join the ranks of the uninsured
- Most are between the ages of 19 and 64

|
Large populations of Virginia’s ethnic minorities are uninsured:
- 48% of Hispanics under age 64
- 20% of African-Americans under age 64
- 11% of Caucasians under age 64
|
|
Uninsured individuals and families often lack basic preventative health care:
- Most cannot afford basic medicines
- Many prolong medical treatment until their condition becomes critical
- The emergency room often becomes the primary care facility for the uninsured. This drives up health care costs for everyone, including those with insurance.
